When I was a little girl one of my favorite places in the world was my grandma’s house. At her house, we would cook and play and craft. I was constantly an artist at work, always trying to create conceptual masterpieces. My sister and cousin would always have eight pieces of art while I would still be working on my first. I wanted every piece to perfectly encapsulate my vision. Eventually, we created “the colorful wall”, a wall in the stairwell to the basement that showcased all of our artwork. I would constantly be creating new work to give to my grandma for the wall. Every piece was one that I was proud to present. I sobbed when the wall was taken down but my true calling to art began in that basement. Even today, I think “would I be proud to have this on the colorful wall?” and if the answer is no, I know I have to revisit the project.
